Curious coincidences

Life is full of interesting coincidences. (One of our museum assistants just experienced one.)

My friend's parents are named Mario and Maria, his girlfriend's parents are Rafael and Rafaela, and he and his girlfriend also share the same name. Two aunts of mine, who had dated the same man and really don't like each other, were born on the exact same day of the exact same year (no, they're not twins!)

And it turns out John Wilkes Booth's brother may have saved Abraham Lincoln's son's life.

I came upon some intriguing facts as I researched the history of A.G. Edwards for a presentation. (A.G. Edwards, Inc. was acquired by Wachovia, and is now Wells Fargo Advisors.)

Now this might get a little confusing, but stay with me! And maybe grab a sheet of paper and a pen to keep track!

Albert Gallatin Edwards was named after the Secretary of the Treasury in office at the time of his birth, Albert Gallatin (no relation). Edwards himself actually became Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in 1865, just days before Lincoln's assassination.

A.G.'s brother Ninian Edwards, a force in Illinois politics was married to Elizabeth Todd, and he knew Abraham Lincoln, at the time a young, promising lawyer. Elizabeth's sister was Mary Todd, who later became Lincoln's wife — in fact, their wedding took place at Ninian's home.

Mary Todd had also been courted by none other than the candidate who would later lose the 1860 presidential election to Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas. Poor Douglas, it looks like he lost to Lincoln twice!
